An evening of Tuvan throat singing

Monday, December 8th, 2008

Alash, a Tuvan throat singing ensemble, was in Pittsburgh on Sunday, December 7th, for a concert at YourInnerVagabond, the hip, global coffeehouse and lounge in Lawrenceville, PA. The Alash quartet has collaborated with Bela Fleck and the Flecktones on their Grammy nominated album, Jingle all the way. Give that album a listen for a new twist on popular holiday tunes. (Imagine a Tuvan throat singing version of Jingle Bells !)

The concert was a fantastic experience. Alash rocked the house with folk songs from Tuva. The venue was perfect, and the audience enjoyed every bit of the concert. Here are some photographs from the concert:

Check out the 80’s hairstyles and fashion, but stay and listen to the mind-blowing virtuosity of Béla Fleck, Sam Bush, John Cowan and Pat Flynn, then collectively called New Grass Revival, play, “Metric Lips” live. And if you want more, check out Seven by seven, below.

This is talent!

Thursday, June 14th, 2007

Here’s a clip from the television show Britain’s best talent. It’s a talent show where pretty much anyone can audition by showcasing their skills. America’s best talent is the U.S version. See the clip below, and then compare it to Pavrotti’s rendering of the same piece. I was in tears.

Kumaresh and Ganesh: Two brothers who have taken the violin to new heights

Saturday, May 26th, 2007

Just got back from an amazing concert by Kumaresh and Ganesh at the SV Temple. These two brothers have mastered the violin. Sometimes, it sounded like a symphony, yet there were just two of them on stage. There is such joy in hearing great music, that too from those who have mastered their instruments, yet have fun every time they play. Click on the photograph for the complete set on flickr.
